What electric motors can be used as generators?

I want to do a small scale project and I would like to know what motors are the most efficient for generating electricity and what motor can do it(ac or dc) also I have an old starter motor an I was wondering if it would work as a generator

For small projects, you want a permanent magnet DC motor (preferably with ball bearings).? You can re-wire a brushless DC motor to operate as an alternator, if you know what you're doing.

Parallel-wound DC motors can be made to work, but I doubt you'll find any small enough.? Series-wound motors are very difficult to use.? Induction motors are also very difficult, well beyond what would be worthwhile in a small project.

Car starter motors are series wound, and won't work easily; you have to have current running through them before they will start to generate voltage.

you can use a dc motor... this es perfect for your project
Virtually all electric motors can be used as generators. Of course, some are more efficient than others.

A car starter motor makes a pretty good generator. I once set up a stationairy bicycle to drive a starter motor to power a small 12V television. I included a car battery in the circuit so that you could stop pedaling for awhile without the TV going dark.
dc motor can be used as a generator
a screwdriver, fan, tape player, cd player, and almost any power tool all have good motors. some have gears so you can get the motors to spin faster
